In all of North America, including the United States, there are 10,000 rescue groups and sanctuaries.Americans spend over $2 billion annually on animal control, shelters, and euthanasia/disposal.In surveys, most people drastically underestimate the number of animals killed in shelters each year.Up to 40% of animals are euthanized or die in shelter care, often due to lack of space and funding.Shelters report adopting out 58.7% of animals as companion animals or pets.34% of shelters use behavior modification to make animals more adoptable.Shelters take in between 3.3 million and 6.3 million animals every year.There are 3,500 brick-and-mortar animal shelters nationwide.Over 2,000 individual shelter and rescue organizations are registered and operating within the United States. ![]()
